The Four Agreements
Pathways to a Thriving Spiritual Community
The way we show up with ourselves shapes the way we show up with others—and our community reflects it back to us. In this series, we explore The Four Agreements as practical pathways to deepen connection, cultivate integrity, and expand the spiritual potential of our shared space. Each week focuses on one Agreement, offering tools and insights to help us communicate clearly, act with intention, and foster a safe, vibrant environment where every person can grow, be seen, and thrive.
About the Book
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is a practical guide to personal freedom and conscious living, drawing on ancient Toltec wisdom.
The book outlines four simple yet profound agreements we can make with ourselves—be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best—that serve as tools for greater clarity, integrity, and inner peace.
By applying these principles, we can transform the way we relate to ourselves and others, creating a foundation for healthier communication, stronger community, and a more joyful, authentic life.
Take it Deeper
Your word carries creative power. It shapes how you see yourself, how others experience you, and the spiritual atmosphere we share. This week, we practice aligning our speech with truth, compassion, and intention. As we do this together, we root our community deeper in clarity, trust, and connection.
-
Spend 10–15 minutes exploring:
How do I speak to myself when I fall short?
Am I using common phrases that affirm a negative view of myself or others?
Where might my words be creating subtle separation?
-
The Sacred Pause (5 Minutes)
Sit comfortably and take three slow breaths.
Bring to mind a recent conversation that felt charged.
Notice the words you used — outwardly or internally — without judgment.
Ask quietly: What would love have said instead?
Close with this affirmation:
My words create clarity, connection, and peace.
First Agreement | February 15Be impeccable with your word.
Rev. Aliza kicks off our series with her talk, “Being Impeccable with Your Word: Speaking with Integrity, Power, and Love”, exploring what it means to be impeccable with your word: speaking truthfully, consciously, and with love.
Take it Deeper
Nothing others do is because of you. Their words and actions arise from their own stories, wounds, and perceptions. Practicing this Agreement helps us release what isn’t ours to carry and remain rooted in our own truth. As we practice this freedom together, we create a spiritual community rooted in steadiness, grace, and emotional maturity.
-
Spend 10–15 minutes exploring:
What situations tend to feel personal to me?
What story about myself gets activated in those moments?
How might I respond if I didn’t assume it was about me?
-
Returning to Center (5 Minutes)
Sit quietly and place one hand over your heart.
Recall a recent interaction that stirred emotion.
Imagine the other person’s words dissolving before reaching your center.
Breathe in steadiness; breathe out release.
Affirm:
I release what is not mine. I remain grounded in truth.
Second Agreement | February 22Don’t take anything personally.
Dr. Nancy Little, LUT, guides us through the Second Agreement with her talk, “Staying Free: The Spiritual Practice of Not Taking Things Personally”, inviting us to release personalization to restore inner peace, strengthen emotional resilience, and stay rooted in our spiritual truth no matter what.
Take it Deeper
Assumptions quietly erode connection. Clarity, on the other hand, builds trust and deepens understanding. This Agreement calls us into courageous communication—asking, expressing, and listening with openness. As we practice asking and clarifying together, we nurture a thriving spiritual community grounded in honesty, understanding, and compassionate connection.
-
Spend 10–15 minutes exploring:
Where do I tend to assume instead of ask?
What fear keeps me from seeking clarity?
What relationship would benefit from honest conversation?
-
Choosing Curiosity (5 Minutes)
Take three slow breaths.
Bring to mind a situation that feels unclear.
Gently ask yourself: What am I assuming here?
Imagine replacing that assumption with openness and curiosity.
Affirm:
I choose clarity. I seek understanding with love.
Third Agreement | March 1Don’t make assumptions.
Gretchel Johnson, LUT, guides us through the Third Agreement with her talk, “Is That True or Did I Just Make That Up?”, looking at how quickly the mind fills in missing information—and how those stories can create unnecessary stress, strain and misunderstanding.
Take it Deeper
Doing your best is not about perfection—it is about presence. This Agreement invites grace, self-compassion, and sustainable effort. When we release comparison and judgment, growth becomes steady and joyful. As we bring our best forward together, we cultivate a spiritual community that celebrates effort, supports growth, and thrives in shared integrity.
-
Spend 10–15 minutes exploring:
How do I define “doing my best”?
Where do I pressure myself beyond what’s sustainable?
What would grace look like in my effort?
-
Compassionate Effort (5 Minutes)
Sit comfortably and take a slow breath.
Bring to mind something you’ve judged yourself for recently.
Imagine offering yourself understanding instead of criticism.
Place your hand over your heart and soften your shoulders.
Affirm:
I honor my effort. I grow with grace.
Fourth Agreement | March 8Always do your best.
Dr. Nancy Little, LUT, closes out the series, with her talk on the Fourth Agreement: Always do your best.
